You can see how this is wrong by using this construction in a “real world” situation: Consider the statement, “He makes $1.50 an hour less than me.” You do not figure his wage by subtracting your wage from $1.50. Instead, you subtract $1.50 from your wage. So remember: the “less than” construction is backwards.

Throughout the 18th century, the watchword of translators was ease of reading. Whatever they did not understand in a text, or thought might bore readers, they omitted. They cheerfully assumed that their own style of expression was the best, and that texts should be made to conform to it in translation. For scholarship they cared no more than had their predecessors, and they did not shrink from making translations from translations in third languages, or from languages that they hardly knew, or—as in the case of James Macpherson’s “translations” of Ossian—from texts that were actually of the “translator’s” own composition.[78]

Living in the world of ministry for a long period of time tends to do things to people which aren’t always positive. I love Shawn because he hasn’t let the lure of twenty-plus years of prophetic ability touch him in an impure way.

Note that “per”, in “Division”, means “divided by”, as in “I drove 90 miles on three gallons of gas, so I got 30 miles per gallon”. Also, “a” sometimes means “divided by”, as in “When I tanked up, I paid $12.36 for three gallons, so the gas was $4.12 a gallon”.

Some times, you’ll be expected to bring your “real world” knowledge to an exercise. For instance, suppose you’re told that “Shelby worked eight hours MTThF and six hours WSat”. You would be expected to understand that this meant that she worked six hours for each of four days, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday; and four hours for each of two days, Wednesday and Saturday. Suppose you’re told that Shelby earns “time and a half” for any hours she works over forty for a given week. You would be expected to know that “time and a half” means 1.5 times her base rate of pay; if her base rate is twelve dollars an hour, then she’d get 1.5 × 12 = 18 dollars for every over-time hour.

Transparency is the extent to which a translation appears to a native speaker of the target language to have originally been written in that language, and conforms to its grammar, syntax and idiom. John Dryden (1631–1700) writes in his preface to the translation anthology Sylvae:

Esta União Europeia tem um papel decisivo a desempenhar na cena europeia liderando essa batalha e não alinhando atrás dos que vêem a segurança como única resposta para este problema aterrador. europarl.europa.eu

The most prominent among them was al-Muqtataf… [It] was the popular expression of a translation movement that had earlier in the century with military and medical manuals and highlights from the Enlightenment canon. (Montesquieu’s Considerations on the Romans and Fénelon’s Telemachus had been favorites.)[23]

The 19th century brought new standards of accuracy and style. In regard to accuracy, observes J.M. Cohen, the policy became “the text, the whole text, and nothing but the text”, except for any bawdy passages and the addition of copious explanatory footnotes.[79] In regard to style, the Victorians’ aim, achieved through far-reaching metaphrase (literality) or pseudo-metaphrase, was to constantly remind readers that they were reading a foreign classic. An exception was the outstanding translation in this period, Edward FitzGerald’s Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (1859), which achieved its Oriental flavor largely by using Persian names and discreet Biblical echoes and actually drew little of its material from the Persian original.[78]

(Technically, the “greater than” construction, in “Addition”, is also backwards in the math from the English. But the order in addition doesn’t matter, so it’s okay to add backwards, because the result will be the same either way.)

Shawn Bolz is the author of The Throne Room Company, Keys to Heaven’s Economy: An Angelic Visitation from the Minister of Finance, and The Nonreligious Guide to Dating and Being Single, and he is also an international speaker, pastor, entertainment host and prophetic minister. Shawn has been a minister since 1993, and these days he is well-known for his strong prophetic gift and fresh Biblical perspective. Shawn taught, ministered, mentored, and prophesied at Metro Christian Fellowship with Mike Bickle in the ‘90s, and in the early 2000s he joined the International House of Prayer in Kansas City. After leaving Kansas City in 2005, he founded and still pastors Expression58 in Los Angeles—a mission base and church focused on training and equipping Christians, encouraging the creative arts, and loving people in the entertainment industry and the poor.

After World War I, when Britain and France divided up the Middle East’s countries, apart from Turkey, between them, pursuant to the Sykes-Picot agreement—in violation of solemn wartime promises of postwar Arab autonomy—there came an immediate reaction: the Muslim Brotherhood emerged in Egypt, the House of Saud took over the Hijaz, and regimes led by army officers came to power in Iran and Turkey. “[B]oth illiberal currents of the modern Middle East,” writes de Bellaigue, “Islamism and militarism, received a major impetus from Western empire-builders.” As often happens in countries undergoing social crisis, the aspirations of the Muslim world’s translators and modernizers, such as Muhammad Abduh, largely had to yield to retrograde currents.[28]

[T]ranslation… is in fact an art both estimable and very difficult, and therefore is not the labor and portion of common minds; [it] should be [practiced] by those who are themselves capable of being actors, when they see greater use in translating the works of others than in their own works, and hold higher than their own glory the service that they render their country.[18]

The question of fidelity vs. transparency has also been formulated in terms of, respectively, “formal equivalence” and “dynamic [or functional] equivalence”. The latter expressions are associated with the translator Eugene Nida and were originally coined to describe ways of translating the Bible, but the two approaches are applicable to any translation.

Computer-assisted translation can include standard dictionary and grammar software. The term, however, normally refers to a range of specialized programs available to the translator, including translation-memory, terminology-management, concordance, and alignment programs.

Views on the possibility of satisfactorily translating poetry show a broad spectrum, depending largely on the degree of latitude to be granted the translator in regard to a poem’s formal features (rhythm, rhyme, verse form, etc.).
